Choosing the Perfect Domain Name

Posted By Faye

Are you thinking of making your own website? Or probably the traffic of your website is disappointingly low? One of the factors that may have an effect on the popularity of your website is the domain, and choosing the perfect name for your website can be tricky. First off, you should take into consideration the nature of your website.

Is your personal site? Maybe you should consider using your name. Is it a business site? Keep it very professional. Is it just for kicks? Make it FUN! Your site domain should be related to the actual content of the site; otherwise, you are misleading the visitors of your site. Second, choose the extension the site that you fancy. Should it be .com, .org, or something else?

Different extensions say something about the nature of your website, so you must keep in mind that your site’s content has some connection to the domain names and extension. Third, like in all things important in life, you should always K.I.S.S. – that is, Keep It Simple, Stupid! A long domain name will be difficult to remember, thus this can decrease your site’s traffic. Remember that domain names should be short and simple enough for people to recall it quickly. Also, other points to consider: Your website domain name is the primary thing that you must consider because it is the thing that you are going to promote in the future. The domain name should encapsulate the gist of what your website is all about.

Reminiscing Netscape

When I was a freshman in college in 1995, the laboratory in the Institute of Computer Science used the ever popular (in those days) Netscape Navigator. This browser had been a household name amongst all students. It was considered fast, reliable and dependable. It never really occurred in our minds that a few years later it would cease to exist.

Netscape Navigator is a proprietary web browser that became popular in the 1990s. On its first press release, it announced that it would be free for download and use to all non-commercial users. However, they changed their policy within two months. By then, only educational and non-profit institutions could use Netscape without charge. Although this was the case, Netscape Navigator was still in the A-list because it made internet surfing a breeze. Most web browsers that time allowed for the display of the page only after the whole web page has been downloaded. One of the important innovations of Netscape was the real-time display of text and graphics as they are being downloaded. Web pages like the Australia business directory and some graphics heavy websites could have been easily downloaded using this browser.

Netscape reached its all-time high in usage share sometime in 1996. However, a competitor, Microsoft Internet Explorer, emerged. Although the earlier versions of IE was found to be inferior and primitive next to Netscape, they soon overrun Netscape sometime in 1997 as they improved in stability. Netscape tried to enhance itself by attaching email, news reader and other functions to its browser, which slowed it down tremendously. Netscape became prone to crashes, and people started to use IE more and more until Netscape eventually stopped developing in 2007. Now that’s a lesson we can all learn from.

Innovations in Social Networking Sites

Posted By Faye

What do YouTube, MySpace and Facebook have in common? Well, besides having a net worth of around a gazillion dollars. Creativity and Innovation.

Social networking and multimedia sites have come a long way in such a short amount of time. For example, in the beginning there was SixDegrees.com which started in 1997. This networking site allowed its users to create their own profile and add and link to their friends. This gave way to community tools like chat and email messaging. Now there are dozens of social networking sites that feature not only the ability to entertain while maintaining a strong link to people within your network, but also the power to build relations and contacts to those who are outside the network, giving opportunities for businesses and the like to flourish. Although it has never been specified that social networking sites are created to establish small- and medium-sized businesses, these websites are flexible enough in their innovation to accommodate changing and growing needs of users. I personally know of people who owe the success of their fledgling apparel store to Facebook. Orders from all over the country (and sometimes even abroad) kick-off their small business.

People’s creativity and innovations have no limit. And one of the best features any social networking and multimedia site can offer is the freedom for these juices to keep flowing, no restrictions. Links to personal and company domain names should never be an issue either. As some people say, “Websites that work together, end up giving their owners a multi-billion dollar business.”

How To Get Cheap Textbooks

College textbooks nowadays are extremely expensive because of all the research and effort that goes into the whole writing and production process. Either way, the students will eventually be forced to make these purchases but they do not necessarily have to shell out a truckload of cash to get it. There are many ways to reduce your textbook expenses, you just need to put in a little more effort and think out of the box.

One way to easily get cheap textbooks is to look for those who rent out their old ones. Nowadays, there are people who make a living out of collecting used textbooks and renting them out to students. Sometimes even, the school has its own program for this to help out students who are living on a budget. It’s definitely much cheaper than having to purchase brand new books plus you can easily return it so it does not take up space in your home.

Another way to get cheap textbooks is to contact the publishing houses. More often than not, they can sell you the books at wholesale price and easily cut off at least ten percent off its suggested retail price.
Of course the best way to get cheap textbooks is to simply borrow it from a friend who took the course in the past. It’s actually free and the easiest way to go about this problem.

At any rate, the point is that you do now have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a brand new textbook. A little resourcefulness and perseverance can go along way in helping save up on your textbook expenses.

Check out how federated search is different in SharePoint Server 2010 …

What is Federated Search in SharePoint Server 2010?
A Federated Search in SharePoint Server enables you to display search results for additional content that is not crawled by your search server. Using Federated Search, the query can be performed over the local content index, or it can be forwarded to an external content repository where it is processed by that repository’s search engine. The repository’s search engine then returns the results to the search server. The search server formats and renders the results from the external repository within the same search results page as the results from the search server’s own content index.

A federated location defines the federated search connection to the external content repository, and comprises Location types, Query and More Results link templates, Triggers, Display information, Restrictions, and Authentication and credentials information. Read the rest of this entry »

Since it was formally announced that Google is now the largest ad company in the world, Microsoft seems to be really insecure after falling behind and it has started the soap opera of the Internet giants.Ever since the year started, there have been talks between Microsoft and Yahoo (more of an effort from Microsoft) to have an agreement to acquire the search engine in exchange for an estimate of 45 billion US Dollars.Yahoo seems to be calm in this arrangement, but has tricks up its sleeve.
Yahoo in turn, to fend off Microsoft’s offer, is currently listening to the offer of AOL, Microsoft’s arch-nemesis, but if you get to look at AOL’s relationship with other giants, Google seems to own 5% of the Time Warner-owned company.Watch out for the next episode as to what will happen next to our favorite Internet characters.

It was declared from a reliable source of the Apple Insider last year that the production of the Mac Mini or any other developments for this device will be put to a halt. But three months after that news break, it was announced by the Cupertino company that they will be releasing drop-ins of the product with an Intel Core2 Duo as its processor. The news (or rumor) site says that it is just an add in and no engineering was required for the added processor. But in a recent post last March 21 says that:

Among the improvements destined for the new lineup are 45-nanometer Core 2 Duo mobile chips starting at 2.1GHz with 3MB of shared L2 cache, an 800MHz front-side bus (up from 667MHz), and a step up to the same Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics processor employed by the existing line of 13-inch consumer MacBooks.

With this news, it seems that all system in terms of engineering and production will be put in full steam.
