As if the EU hasn’t just banned the Pirate Bay people and sent them into their respective cells, here comes Norway-based, Moot, a file sharing service that allows locally linked individuals connected through the same WiFi connection. They can be friends, strangers or even the police for that matter as long as they have the necessary software installed allowing them access to the file-sharing capabilities of the software. On your mobile, you get a sort of radar screen that shows the relational location of registered members who have the software installed. It is still in it’s infancy and for it to be of any use for anybody.
It also has quite a huge gap to bridge with the many OS’s running on the many mobile’s and smart phones being available to mostly Linux and Windows based devices. There is also an issue of privacy which may soon bubble out of control as more and more users jump onto the service for as stated, it makes you visible to all who have the software, and it would surely only be time before somebody figures out of a way to break installed security measures.
File sharing is quite a vast field that not much can be done when the Pandora’s box has been opened, as with the case of the Pirate Bay, there may be no easy way to implement such system. Those security issues may be the driving force why they limited their coverage to specific WiFi areas only and not on a wider expanse such as the internet itself which would surely land it in hot water like most file sharing services.
