Innovations in Social Networking Sites

Posted By Faye

What do YouTube, MySpace and Facebook have in common? Well, besides having a net worth of around a gazillion dollars. Creativity and Innovation.

Social networking and multimedia sites have come a long way in such a short amount of time. For example, in the beginning there was SixDegrees.com which started in 1997. This networking site allowed its users to create their own profile and add and link to their friends. This gave way to community tools like chat and email messaging. Now there are dozens of social networking sites that feature not only the ability to entertain while maintaining a strong link to people within your network, but also the power to build relations and contacts to those who are outside the network, giving opportunities for businesses and the like to flourish. Although it has never been specified that social networking sites are created to establish small- and medium-sized businesses, these websites are flexible enough in their innovation to accommodate changing and growing needs of users. I personally know of people who owe the success of their fledgling apparel store to Facebook. Orders from all over the country (and sometimes even abroad) kick-off their small business.

People’s creativity and innovations have no limit. And one of the best features any social networking and multimedia site can offer is the freedom for these juices to keep flowing, no restrictions. Links to personal and company domain names should never be an issue either. As some people say, “Websites that work together, end up giving their owners a multi-billion dollar business.”

Choosing the Perfect Domain Name

Posted By Faye

Are you thinking of making your own website? Or probably the traffic of your website is disappointingly low? One of the factors that may have an effect on the popularity of your website is the domain, and choosing the perfect name for your website can be tricky. First off, you should take into consideration the nature of your website.

Is your personal site? Maybe you should consider using your name. Is it a business site? Keep it very professional. Is it just for kicks? Make it FUN! Your site domain should be related to the actual content of the site; otherwise, you are misleading the visitors of your site. Second, choose the extension the site that you fancy. Should it be .com, .org, or something else?

Different extensions say something about the nature of your website, so you must keep in mind that your site’s content has some connection to the domain names and extension. Third, like in all things important in life, you should always K.I.S.S. – that is, Keep It Simple, Stupid! A long domain name will be difficult to remember, thus this can decrease your site’s traffic. Remember that domain names should be short and simple enough for people to recall it quickly. Also, other points to consider: Your website domain name is the primary thing that you must consider because it is the thing that you are going to promote in the future. The domain name should encapsulate the gist of what your website is all about.

Is Your Business Ready For Web 2.0 E-Commerce?

Posted By Faye

Web 2.0 e-commerce is one of the many boons of Web 2.0 innovations that have made online shopping experience very simple and effective. The biggest advantage of this application is that the provider of online services and products can offer better customer service and the customers can interact more easily and effectively. The various features of Web 2.0 e-commerce are being enumerated below.

The online shopping experience has changed. Thanks to the many Web 2.0 innovations, it is becoming much easier for businesses to provide high levels of service to their customers. A new form of e-commerce is rising and Web 2.0 applications are bringing customers closer to the products and services they wish to purchase, while providing an interactive customer service never before seen until now. The changes in this relationship, between businesses and their customers, is an important study that should be undertaken by anyone looking to grow their business this year and into the future.

Rating Systems

Customers are frequently able to leave their personal ratings of products and services they have purchased and used, on the very websites they have purchased from. This allows prospective buyers to make purchasing decisions based on user feedback. If you have an excellent product, this form of “social proof” can skyrocket sales of your products. Testimonials have always been a good form of social proof, but now these testimonials are in real-time.

Product Comparisons

This is somewhat similar to the rating systems, only here, customers are able to compare and contrast various products through websites that allow these comparisons to be made. A perfect example of this form of Web 2.0 e-commerce is Shopping.com. The travel industry is also using this to help customers choose the best rates on their airfares, and have been for quite some time. This is all about empowering the customer with the ability to take control of their situation and seek the best deals possible.

Video Showcases

Advances in technology have allowed just about anyone to show off their products and services via video broadcasts. It is not uncommon to see companies putting their products up for the world to see on sites like YouTube. Expect this to increase as Google and other major players slowly convert the Internet into a giant television. Adding simple video of your products to your description pages, or even your pages where the actual purchases will be made can increase your sales conversions.

RSS Feeds

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and the name says it all. Due to the issues of email delivery these days, many companies are making product announcements via RSS feeds. These types of announcements can take many forms. New product launches, price changes, and even special promotional offers can be made to certain segments of a marketing list instantly with RSS.

Instant Messaging

Thanks to Web 2.0 e-commerce, many companies are setting up live chat networks with their customers via Instant Messaging services, by using software that merge the most popular Instant Messenger applications into one. An example of this type of application can be seen at Meebo.com. This is becoming especially important for high-end products and services, where a customer may need to feel more comfortable with a major purchase by getting a few questions answered first. Marketers know that when it comes to a customer on your website, there is a small window of opportunity to make that sale. If you miss it, the customer is gone, and may not return. Being able to immediately communicate with your customers is becoming vitally important.

Web 2.0 e-commerce scores over its earlier version by providing an easier and larger scope of interaction between your website and the user.

So what does all this mean if you wish to continue to generate new business in the years to come? It means that with Web 2.0, you need to be prepared for more interaction with your customers, and you need to be prepared for the growing influence your customers will have on the growth of your business. This brings a whole new meaning to customer service doesn’t it?

Check out how federated search is different in SharePoint Server 2010 …

What is Federated Search in SharePoint Server 2010?
A Federated Search in SharePoint Server enables you to display search results for additional content that is not crawled by your search server. Using Federated Search, the query can be performed over the local content index, or it can be forwarded to an external content repository where it is processed by that repository’s search engine. The repository’s search engine then returns the results to the search server. The search server formats and renders the results from the external repository within the same search results page as the results from the search server’s own content index.

A federated location defines the federated search connection to the external content repository, and comprises Location types, Query and More Results link templates, Triggers, Display information, Restrictions, and Authentication and credentials information. Read the rest of this entry »

SharePoint2010 Quota Template Feature

Posted By Faye

What is a SharePoint Server 2010 Quota Template?
A SharePoint Server 2010 quota template consists of storage limit values that specify the maximum amount of data that can be stored in a site collection. When the storage limit is reached, a quota template can also trigger an e-mail alert to the site collection administrator. You can create a quota template that can be applied to any site collection in the farm. A quota template can also be applied to a site collection that contains sandboxed solutions. You can limit the maximum usage per day and send a warning e-mail message when the usage limit is approaching. If the maximum usage limit is reached, the sandboxed solution is disabled for the rest of the day, and an e-mail message is sent to the site collection administrator. You can also modify existing quota templates. This allows you to modify storage limits for all of the site collections that use the same quota template. When you modify a quota template, you must then reapply it to existing site collections before the new storage limits are enforced. You can delete a quota template if necessary. However, deleting a quota template will not delete quota values from sites that were created by using the quota template. If you want to remove quotas from all sites by using a specific quota template, you must use the object model or perform a SQL query. Read the rest of this entry »

The Challenge of the Mobile Web

Posted By Faye

Date: September 1st, 2010

It’s enough to look around and see the booming increase of mobile phones and handheld computers; most modern users have at least one handheld device. Increased simplicity has caused ‘premium’-featured models to be introduced to the ‘entry-level’ customers. Have you ever seen a child Tweeting away or updating their Facebook status from their mobile phone? It’s not restricted to them anymore, with business-people actively performing their entire work with the use of their mobile phone only – sending and receiving e-mails, sharing data, surfing the mobile website, etc.

For quite some time, people were unaware of the increasing gravity of this new mobile web front. How many are there, you might ask? Wikipedia claims that “The total number of mobile website users grew past the total number of desktop computer-based web users for the first time in 2008,” according to data report compiled by the International Telecommunications Union on Oct 2009. Although a complete citation is still needed at the time of writing in order to meet Wikipedia’s guidelines, such a statement a simple observation informs you that this statement is fundamentally true, or at least very accurate. Chances are that existing and potential customers are out there already. Can you afford to be left out? If you already have a website or are planning to do so, the question is rather rhetorical.

Mobile web – a new frontier

Website owners willing to move along with the wave of progress are required to stay updated with all the latest developments, which is a difficult task for many reasons. First and foremost, it requires them to remain updated with the latest lingo as well as be aware of all the news, upcoming products and upcoming trends in an often-updated mobile web world. Additionally, mobile web optimization requires profound knowledge and understanding of that market because many limitations are stressed in mobile web development: the smaller screen size forces them to adapt the experience differently on the mobile web; different layouts are required since there are no tabs and windows in a mobile web browser; navigation is rather crippled compared to the common mouse-and-keyboard combo; lack of support for certain technologies; speed of access; size of the page; memory restrictions and many more…

On the other hand, mobile web experience offers new and exciting features such as touch interface, kinetic scrolling, and location awareness, among many others.

Taking all of the above issues into account, it is clear that a certain state of mind is required from a mobile web site developer to tackle such issues.

Mobile web – innovation at its fullest

So far, such adaptations for a mobile web site were conducted manually. Users were actually building two sets of pages, one for every platform. Otherwise, the use of scripts, so-called ‘browser hacks’ and techniques were required for a mobile website site. For example, a common practice is to build a script that detects the browser version and type, which then builds specific sets of CSS designs for each and finally merges it all together. Sometimes it worked, most of the time it didn’t. You can’t always assume that your user supports scripts, and not all browsers support CSS properly. So many things can go wrong. You wouldn’t leave things to chance when it comes to your business, would you?

Usually, most difficult tasks will get simplified over time. Let’s face it -people don’t like to work hard, and truth be told, they shouldn’t. A computer’s main purpose was to make life easier, and even though new developments come along with new complications, you can rest assured that the innovative mind will quickly come out with a solution. Parenthetically, the truly-innovative ideas provide solutions to problems you have yet to meet. Imagine being told 10 years ago that a major driving force in the industry will be a video-hosting website. Sounds far-fetched, right? Hosting videos seemed so minor back in the day… Now think of YouTube and see how they told everyone that they needed video hosting right away…

Mobile web – dive in, now

Take our word for it – you need a website tailored for mobile web handheld devices. If not now, then tomorrow. Next week though, your competitor may already see the need and take action, building a mobile website site, biting into your cake (or just taking it wholly, if you’re not there to fight for it).

The good news is that all of the hardships described above have been resolved successfully and packed into a mobile web application platform actually usable by everyone, with no prior knowledge required.

Our innovative product allows you to do all that without the hassle. Converting and creating new mobile web sites is a breeze, as our system guides you on every step of the way. Do not hesitate, begin now, and build your mobile web site, all free of charge!

Windows VPS Hosting – Gold Mine For Software Developers

Posted By Faye

The Windows VPS hosting solutions have made it much easier for website and software developers alike. These plans have made it easier in the areas of cost effectiveness, application installation and server control. There are very few technical differences between a virtual server and a dedicated server, while there is a large difference in price. VPS hosting solutions have become the most popular hosting solution in recent times because of these reasons.

Cost Effectiveness

As stated before, today’s virtual servers offer almost all of the benefits that dedicated servers do. You must purchase a physical system to run your websites on a dedicated server, whereas there is no need for physical equipment with a virtual private server. Webmasters and software developers prefer virtual servers because the dedicated server systems are expensive to buy. They are still able to customize their applications because virtual servers allow them to access any previously stored computer resources.

Convenience

Having a Windows VPS hosting account makes the whole server process a lot more convenient. Depending on the host you choose, your virtual server can be managed and closely watching by the host company. Most companies offer burstable RAM, which makes it more convenient for webmasters and software developers to complete smaller tasks. The resource capacity on your server will be managed by your host and you will be notified if you need to upgrade to a higher usage account.

Unlimited Program Usage

Many developers use different programs to create software. A shared server puts limits on the applications that can be used on the server. On the other hand, any application (as long as it is legal) is allowed to be used with a Windows VPS hosting account. If need be, developers can even combine different applications on the server. This flexibility gives developers and webmasters so much more leeway in their creations. Open source applications are another perk of Windows VPS hosting. These applications are offered for free, as opposed to high costing proprietary applications.
